These days, there aren’t many veterans of 1990s wrestling that are still working in televised promotions today. While fans are obviously thankful they can still watch Edge, Christian Cage, Sting, and Rey Mysterio do their thing, there are also guys still going like Rhyno — sometimes spelled Rhino — who’s always been one of the more underrated wrestlers.

At this point, Rhyno has been performing for over a quarter of century, and is best known for his run in ECW, along with stints in WWE, Impact Wrestling, and various independent and international promotions. He’s had quite a career so let’s take a look at what fans should know about “the Man Beast.”

10 Appeared As A Jobber in WCW And WWE

Hailing from Detroit but trained in Canada by future Impact Wrestling boss Scott D’Amore, it wasn’t long before Rhyno began appearing on major promotions’ TV shows in jobber squashes. Working as “Terry Richards,” the future Rhyno’s first televised matches would be on WCW shows in losses against Jim Duggan, The Renegade, and the Nasty Boys. Rhyno would also wrestle squashes for WWE as well, losing to Henry O’Godwinn on an episode of Raw and to The Truth Commission on an episode of Shotgun Saturday Night.

9 Joined ECW In 1999

The year 1999 would bring Rhyno’s debut in Extreme Championship Wrestling, where his sadistically violent powerhouse persona would really take shape. Initially billed as “Rhino Richards,” it wasn’t long before Rhyno began challenging for titles, starting with Taz’s World Heavyweight Title and followed by joining Steve Corino to challenge Tommy Dreamer and Raven for the Tag Team Title. His first successful title win, however, would be when he defeated Yoshihiro Tajiri for the World Television Championship, which he held for 126 days in his first reign.

8 The Last ECW Heavyweight Champion

Rhyno’s arguably biggest rivalry in ECW would be with The Sandman, with their feud starting up soon after his 1999 arrival but really ramping up during the summer of 2000. With clashes for Rhyno’s Television Title at Hardcore Heaven and Heatwave and incidents like Rhyno attacking Sandman’s wife Lori, Rhyno finally put away Sandman to win the World Title at Guilty As Charged in early 2001.

While Rhyno was at the very top of the company as both World Champion and Television Champion, Guilty As Charged would be ECW’s final pay-per-view, and the promotion would shutter months later.

7 Joined The Alliance In WWE

Following ECW’s final shows, Rhyno would sign to WWE, debuting in mid-March of 2001 and would capture the Hardcore Championship three times before the big WCW/ECW invasion storyline began. Once the invasion of WWE kicked off, Rhyno joined the WCW/ECW Alliance and even represented the team in the main event tag team match at the Invasion pay-per-view. From there, as part of The Alliance, Rhyno feuded with Chris Jericho and briefly held the WCW United States Championship.

6 NWA World Heavyweight Champion

Rhyno departed WWE in June 2005 and debuted in Impact Wrestling (back then known as TNA) a month later, where he initially aligned with Raven before turning heel to join up with Jeff Jarrett. This would lead to Rhyno taking on Raven for the NWA World Title in a losing effort, but not the end of his pursuit. After winning a gauntlet match, Rhyno was once again #1 Contender for the World Title, this time against Jeff Jarrett, who he defeated at Bound For Glory 2005 only to lose it back two days later on an episode of Impact.

5 Friends With Edge & Christian

Rhyno's WWE debut alongside Edge and Christian

Early in his career, while wrestling on the Canadian indie scene, Rhyno befriended both Edge and Christian, and their relationship would continue in an on-screen capacity. When Rhyno initially debuted in WWE, he was aligned with Edge and Christian, and the trio later added Kurt Angle to their ranks to form the short-lived Team RECK. This association would carry over to Impact once both Rhyno and Christian were both there, with the two initially feuding before forming a tag team and feuding with Team 3D.

4 Member of S.C.U.M. In ROH

Ring of Honor's SCUM faction

After leaving Impact in 2010 and wrestling on the indies, Rhyno would resurface in Ring of Honor as a mercenary for Prince Nana’s faction, The Embassy, where he feuded with Homicide. After being chosen by ROH boss Jim Cornette to challenge S.C.U.M. faction leader Kevin Steen for the Ring of Honor World Championship, Rhino ended up being hired by the group.

As a member of S.C.U.M., Rhyno’s main target was Jay Lethal, who was #1 Contender to Kevin Steen’s title, but the group soon disbanded after losing a Steel Cage Warfare Match, which Rhyno participated in.

3 Wrestled On NXT

Early 2015 saw Rhyno return to WWE by performing on its developmental brand, NXT. There, he set his sights on the NXT Championship — albeit he never actually challenged for it — and put on matches with Sami Zayn, Finn Balor, Samoa Joe, and Baron Corbin. After losing to Corbin, the two formed a tag team and dominated the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament only to lose to Samoa Joe and Finn Balor in the final round. Amid this NXT run, Rhyno also performed on the main roster, joining fellow ECW Originals Tommy Dreamer and The Dudley Boyz to feud with The Wyatt Family.

2 Formed A Tag Team With Heath Slater

Following the 2016 Raw/SmackDown brand split, Rhyno returned to the main roster, where he was a thorn in the side of Heath Slater, who was struggling to get signed to either brand. Eventually, Slater asked Rhyno to be his partner in the tournament for the new SmackDown Tag Team Championship, which they ended up winning to become the inaugural champs. This randomly thrown together tag team proved to be an entertaining success, and the two held the tag belts for 84 days.

1 Reunited With Heath In Impact

After being released from WWE in 2019, Rhyno returned to Impact Wrestling, where he teamed up with Rob Van Dam to go after the tag belts and feuded with Moose. The following year brought Heath Slater’s release from WWE, and an Impact storyline where the newly christened Heath attempted to get an Impact contract. The two were once again reunited, but Heath got injured, causing Rhyno to join up with Eric Young’s villainous stable, Violent By Design, which Rhyno would later leave to reunite with Heath once he healed up.
