Seth ‘Freakin’ Rollins has been one of WWE’s top tier performers for many years now, dazzling viewers with his incredible matches, rivalries, and highly entertaining character work. Whether challenging for the WWE World, Intercontinental, or United States Championship, Rollins has proven time and time again his ability to steal the show on any given night.

Dave Meltzer’s star-rating system at the ‘Wrestling Observer Newsletter’ has long been the benchmark for professional wrestling match ratings. Which WWE matches of Seth Rollins were underappreciated, or overhyped, by Dave Meltzer and his star-rating system?

10 Overrated: Vs. John Cena, WWE United States Championship, WWE Night Of Champions 2015, 4*

John Cena vs Seth Rollins WWE Night of Champions 2015

A very good, if not formulaic, match up between John Cena and Rollins to finish their WWE rivalry in 2015. Certainly not on the level of their two previous bouts, with Cena looking to reclaim his United States Championship in the co-main event and doing so successfully. The in-ring work was good, but it felt they were holding back, possibly because Rollins had to wrestle back-to-back championship matches. Rollins also looked very weak here losing clean to Cena, then going on to defeat Sting clean making the legend seem weak in turn. A good Pay-Per-View bout but a highly flawed one.

9 Underrated: Vs. Finn Balor & The Miz, WWE Intercontinental Championship, Triple Threat, WWE WrestleMania 34, 3.5*

Seth Rollins Vs Finn Balor Vs The Miz

A fantastic triple threat bout to open 2018s WrestleMania 34 as The Miz defended his Intercontinental Championship against Rollins and Finn Balor. With fast-paced, fluid, exciting in-ring action mixed with a red-hot WrestleMania crowd, this was a barnstormer with superb drama as well throughout. Rollins would triumph to become new Intercontinental Champion in a highly underrated WrestleMania match up.

8 Overrated: Vs. Rey Mysterio, Eye For An Eye, The Horror Show At WWE Extreme Rules, 4*

Seth Rollins vs Rey Mysterio Extreme Rules

A very good, but flawed, match between Rey Mysterio and Rollins at WWE’s Horror Show at Extreme Rules event in July 2020. While the two stars clearly displayed stellar in-ring work and chemistry, the silly stipulation at hand led to a lack of proper drama or heat as the two aimed to ‘take’ the other’s eye out of their socket. An absurd finish tarnished the two stars’ performances who did their best with what they were given, in a very good match that could have been great.

7 Underrated: Vs. AJ Styles, WWE Monday Night Raw #1504, 3.5*

Seth Rollins vs AJ Styles WWE RAW

A great RAW main event earlier this year in March heading into WrestleMania, as Seth Rollins looked to secure his spot at the event opposite AJ Styles. The two tore the house down as expected from two of WWE’s absolute best in-ring workers, with excellent pacing, counters, sequences, and a blistering closing stretch. Although slightly marred by a DQ finish as Edge attacked Styles to further their storyline, this was an excellent television main event between Rollins and Styles.

6 Overrated: Men’s Money In The Bank Ladder Match, WWE Money In The Bank 2022, 4.25*

WWE Mens Money in the Bank Ladder match 2022

This was a very good Money in the Bank Ladder match at this year’s Money in the Bank PPV in the main event slot. However, compared to other ladder matches in WWE’s past, this was very underwhelming with a lackluster spot fest, and questionable booking, leading to a less than spectacular match overall.

Whether it was focusing on the wrong competitors, with Rollins barely featured in this bout, or a predictable winner, this never clicked fully as other show-stealing ladder matches have.

5 Underrated: Vs. Roman Reigns, WWE World Heavyweight Championship, WWE Money In The Bank 2016, 3.75*

Seth Rollins Vs Roman Reigns WWE Money in the Bank 2016

This was a stellar main event at 2016s Money in the Bank PPV, as Roman Reigns defended his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against the returning Seth Rollins. These two stars have displayed excellent chemistry on numerous occasions, and this was arguably their best bout yet. Fantastic storytelling, great pacing, a splendid closing stretch, and a riveting atmosphere led to a great main event with Rollins defeating Reigns clean to become two-time champion. Dean Ambrose’s successful cash-in post-match was the cherry on top of this underrated World Championship match up.

4 Overrated: Extreme Rules Fatal Five Way, WWE Extreme Rules 2017, 4.5*

Samoa Joe v Finn Balor v Roman Reigns v Bray Wyatt v Seth Rollins Extreme Rules 2017 Cropped

This was a stellar main event in this chaotic fatal five way to determine the number one contender for Brock Lesnar’s WWE Universal Championship. However, it never quite reached the level of a 4.5* bout as Dave Meltzer would suggest.

Although WWE multi-man matches are always very well-done and each star contributed to the action here, this did not tear the house down and was boosted by a lackluster PPV. The winner was a nice surprise as Samoa Joe emerged victorious in a great bout, but not a classic PPV main event.

3 Underrated: Vs. Dean Ambrose, WWE World Heavyweight Championship, Ladder Match, WWE Money In The Bank 2015, 4*

Seth Rollins v Dean Ambrose Money in the Bank 2015 Cropped

A superb ladder match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at 2015s Money in the Bank PPV, as Dean Ambrose challenged Seth Rollins in a huge main event. A unique but brilliant approach to the ladder stipulation here as the two brutalized one another in a sensational display of storytelling and psychology, without relying on the typical spot fest formula. Splendid in-ring work throughout with a valiant babyface performance by Ambrose, but Rollins would survive grasping the championship as the two fought atop the ladder. Fantastic match top to bottom and certainly underrated by Dave Meltzer.

2 Overrated: W/ Dean Ambrose & Roman Reigns (The Shield) Vs. Baron Corbin, Bobby Lashley, & Drew McIntyre, Six-Man Tag, WWE Fastlane 2019, 4.5*

The Shield vs McIntyre, Corbin, Lashley Fastlane 2019

While still a great main event in this final Shield Reunion at 2019s Fastlane event, this was not a 4.5* level six-man tag which implies it was an amazing show stealer. A bout of nostalgia that achieved its desired outcome, this was still highly exciting as the trios started slow but kicked into the next gear in the second half with riveting action.

However, the winners were never in question, and this bout ranks just below the fantastic WWE Championship triple threat earlier in the night. A great match but nothing more than that.

1 Underrated: Vs. John Cena & Brock Lesnar, WWE World Heavyweight Championship, Triple Threat, WWE Royal Rumble 2015, 4.75*

John Cena Vs Seth Rollins Vs Brock Lesnar

An absolutely amazing triple threat at WWE’s Royal Rumble PPV in January 2015, with the three stars tearing the house down in an instant classic here. The in-ring action was incredible with unbelievable drama, spots, sequences, and more in a perfectly executed triple threat as the crowd went wild. This was a true star-making performance for Rollins who would go on to cash in at WrestleMania that same year. A very deserving 4.75* rating from Dave Meltzer, but it is difficult to understand how this wasn’t a five-star-classic as it ranks as one of WWE’s best world title matches in its history.
