Cesaro, one of the most underused WWE superstars in recent memory, had a nice main event run while it lasted.

The Swiss Superman's fanbase waited a long time to see him in the main event title scene. He finally got that opportunity after WrestleMania 37, when Cesaro entered what turned out to be a short-lived program with Universal Champion Roman Reigns.

As expected, Reigns managed to successfully defend his title against Cesaro in the main event of WrestleMania Backlash. The two superstars put together a legitimate Match of the Year candidate, and it was reasonable to believe that WWE would continue the Reigns-Cesaro program.

But here we are a month later, and it's clear that Vince McMahon and company don't plan to build off of Cesaro's short but sweet main event run. It's truly a travesty.

Cesaro The Main Eventer: Fun While It Lasted

Cesaro cemented himself as a worthy main eventer when he put on a top-notch performance against Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 37. Cesaro pinned The Architect to pick up his first singles victory at the Show of Shows. Yes, it took WWE that long.

Following Reigns' program with Daniel Bryan, Cesaro entered the Universal title picture and challenged the former. His promos were of excellent quality, and you can argue that Cesaro was the best opponent for Reigns during the latter's run as a heel on SmackDown.

Bryan, Jey Uso and Kevin Owens all got multiple opportunities to defeat Reigns for the Universal Championship. For some reason, Cesaro only got the one match.

Cesaro has since resumed his program with Rollins. There's no denying that those two have displayed excellent chemistry together, but they're not going to top the thrilling match at WrestleMania. What good does another match (or two, or three) do for the Swiss Superman here?

Reigns is now in a program with Rey Mysterio, whom he'll defend the title against this Sunday. It's widely believed that Reigns will face John Cena in the main event of SummerSlam on Aug. 21.

Add it all up, and it's clear that Cesaro's main event run is over with. At least, for now.

WWE Has Missed Countless Opportunities With Cesaro

There's a long list of beloved and extremely decorated superstars that McMahon hasn't been fully sold on. Cesaro instantly comes to mind in that category.

Cesaro signed with the WWE back in 2011. He's certainly among the company's elite in-ring performers, that much is undeniable. It's simply disappointing that WWE refused to give him a look with the WWE or Universal Championship.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter named Cesaro the "Most Underrated" wrestler every year from 2013 to 2016. Hall of Famer Goldberg has voiced his desire to face the former United States Champion. Last year, AEW wrestler Chris Jericho stated his belief that Cesaro "would be one of our top guys" in the company.

With elite in-ring work and a humble personality, Cesaro has earned the respect and admiration of several legends and stars. With zero major championship scenes on his resume, he certainly stands out as one of the most underused stars in history.

Cesaro Deserves Another Main Event Run

Based on WWE's booking history with Cesaro, it's easy to assume that we won't see him in the main event scene again. Fans can only hope that it doesn't turn out to be the case, because Cesaro more than proved himself as a deserving WWE or Universal Champion.

WWE is all-in on pushing Reigns as the top star right now, and understandably so. But this doesn't mean that Cesaro should never be a main event performer again. WWE will hopefully give him another opportunity in the not-so-distant future.
