Pranks and ribs in professional wrestling used to be as commonplace as a headlock once upon a time. With wrestlers being on the road approximately 300 days a year in the old days, ribbing was essential for getting through it all and keeping a light mood. Much of it was in good-natured fun in an attempt to get a pop from the boys, like with the WWE's Mr. Perfect and the Smoking Gunns shaving X-Pac's eyebrow, or Owen Hart giving Yokozuna laxatives on an airplane. But unfortunately, sometimes the pranks went too far.

Owen Hart had the reputation of being "King of the Ribs," as he was always trying to get one over on someone. He once convinced Ahmed Johnson that he was going to be on the Tonight Show, prompting Ahmed to spend $4,000 on a suit. Owen claimed a limo would pick him up, but the limo obviously never showed. Another time, he stole Gangrel's watch and helped him look for it, and ultimately returned the watch the next time they were in that town.

One night at a live event in San Jose, Owen and Mick Foley were set to have a match, and heard Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer was in attendance. Upon learning that, Owen and Foley made it their goal to have the worst match ever in an attempt to get a negative star rating from Meltzer.

Owen Hart And Mick Foley Hit Each Other With Bags Of Popcorn

Unfortunately, there is no known video footage of the match, but there are accounts from Foley in his first book, and Meltzer on an appearance of Talk Is Jericho in 2019. Apparently Owen and Foley were overselling every move, and it turned into a hardcore match of sorts. They hit each other with big bags of popcorn and sold it like death.

"So here’s the thing, I didn’t know that they were doing this,"Meltzer recalled on Talk Is Jericho. "I did watch the match, and they took bags of popcorn, and they would hit each other with bags of popcorn, and sell it like crazy. And it was absolutely preposterous. But it also got over." Owen also did popcorn angels after one of the bags was broken. Foley would later use the popcorn bag against The Rock during their Halftime Heat match in 1999.

Steve Austin Broke Character As The Special Enforcer

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin acted as the Special Enforcer for the match outside the ring. Foley said in his book that Austin had to bury his head in his arms in order to hide the laughter. "The way I remember the story, they went to the back, and Austin was just like, ‘That was the worst piece of s**t match,'" said Meltzer. "And they were just happy that Austin said it, they didn’t care at that point. ‘If Austin said it was terrible, that was good enough for us. Who cares what Dave says?’ But yeah, I remember them completely overselling hitting each other with bags of popcorn, going, ‘This is so ridiculous.'”

Dave Meltzer Didn't Hate Owen Hart And Mick Foley's Match

Despite their best attempts to have the worst match ever, Owen and Foley were just too funny and got over with the San Jose crowd. Unfortunately for them, Meltzer claimed the match wasn't even close to a negative star match. "And also, even those guys trying to be bad, they were still, like it really wasn’t what I would call a bad match," said Meltzer. "It was a ridiculous match. It was like, watching two guys do a comedy match, but they’re talented guys. It really wasn’t anything resembling a negative star horrible match. It was just a comedy match that got over with the crowd.”
