Pro wrestling is unique from other sports and athletic endeavors because of its scripted, storyline-based nature. Because of this, wrestling -- particularly as it concerns long-running companies like World Wrestling Entertainment -- has a vocal fandom closer to that of superhero comics, as fans love to pay attention to continuity even when WWE chooses to ignore it.

RELATED: 10 Times WWE Ignored Its Own HistoryBecause of this tendency, there are a number of storylines and feuds that many fans would love to see play out in WWE, but at this point seem very unlikely. Sometimes impossibility is because of the age of the people involved or because some stars no longer work for the company.

10 Battle of the Horsewomen

The Four Horsewomen of NXT stare down with the Four Horsewomen of MMA

In the 2010s, the friends group of professional fighters Ronda Rousey, Shayna Baszler, Marina Shafir, and Jessamyn Duke were the talk of the MMA world, earning them the nickname of the Four Horsewomen as a shoutout to the classic NWA/WCW stable. WWE followed suit by naming rising stars Bayley, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and Sasha Banks the Four Horsewomen of NXT. Eventually WWE signed the MMA Horsewomen, and even had the two groups engage in a staredown at the Mae Young Classic, but a match never happened between them and may never happen given that Shayna’s the last of her group left.

9 Bullet Club Invasion

The Club: Luke Gallows, AJ Styles, and Karl Anderson in WWE

In 2016, WWE signed a number of wrestlers from New Japan Pro Wrestling, including Bullet Club leader AJ Styles as well as BC's resident tag team of Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows. Eventually they would be reunited as “The Club” or “The O.C.” but it was hardly the potential WWE-branded Bullet Club invasion arc that in-the-know fans hoped for with Anderson and Gallows basically goofball henchmen for Styles. It’s wild that WWE signed a good chunk of the Bullet Club and never bothered to figure out how to cash in on it.

8 Steve Austin vs. Anyone

CM Punk and Steve Austin

Given that Steve Austin is only in his mid-50s at this point, it’s a shame that his neck injury eventually forced him into an early retirement back in 2003. Because of this, Austin, WWE, and the fans missed out on a number of potential dream matches.

RELATED: 10 Steve Austin Dream Matches We Never Got To SeeIt’s hard to pin down just one potential dream feud for Stone Cold, as fans never got him taking on WCW rivals in Hulk Hogan or Goldberg, testing the mettle of rising ace John Cena, or stepping back in the ring against CM Punk in the early 2010s.

7 The New Day vs. The Elite

The New Day and The Elite

WWE’s The New Day (Kofi Kingston, Big E, and Xavier Woods) and New Japan’s Elite subfaction of the Bullet Club (Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks) had a pretty well known (and totally friendly) public rivalry going on, with fans hoping that one day the two trios would square off in the ring. Given that The New Day have it pretty great in WWE and The Elite famously turned down WWE offers to co-found their own promotion in AEW, this rivalry making it to wrestling television feels extremely unlikely. Woods and Omega did, however, take one another on in a public game of Street Fighter V.

6 Shayna Baszler vs. Asuka

Asuka vs. Shayna Baszler at Elimination Chamber

If there’s one feud that fans of women’s wrestling deserve, it’s between two of the most dominant NXT Women’s Champions of all time. Asuka was undefeated during her time in NXT and never lost the belt, while Shayna Baszler was the first two-time champion and conquered pretty much every woman on the show. They’ve clashed in a few matches here and there, but many of those were in service of a tag team rivalry and not an awesome marquee singles match fans deserved to see.

5 Edge & Christian Reunion

Edge and Christian on Raw in 2020

Since their 2010s retirements, both Edge and Christian made occasional guest appearances for WWE before finally returning to the ring in the 2020s. Christian wrestled a one-minute match against Randy Orton for WWE in 2020, but ended up going over to AEW instead, while Edge remained in WWE. It’s a shame the two real-life best friends and legendary tag team partners never really got to have a reunion match together, because loads of WWE fans who remember the good times would love that.

4 nWo vs. DX

D-Generation X faces off with the New World Order at WrestleMania 31

WCW hit an apex in the late 1990s when it introduced the villainous New World Order stable, and WWE followed suit about a year later with the creation of a very similar group, the rude and crude pranksters known as D-Generation X. Once WWE bought WCW, having the two groups feud seemed like a no-brainer, but it never happened save for a brief encounter at WrestleMania 31.

By the time WWE introduced the nWo in 2002, Triple H had returned from injury and Shawn Michaels came out of retirement. It seemed like the obvious choice would be to reform D-X and feud with the nWo, but instead Michaels joined the group, which broke up a month later, and Trips and Shawn feuded instead.

3 The Rock vs. Roman Reigns

the Rock and Roman Reigns at Royal Rumble 2015

Roman Reigns has been killing it on SmackDown since his heel turn, and has been warding off pretty much all challengers, including even WWE’s most overpowered character, John Cena. One of the next big steps for Reigns (besides the Brock Lesnar feud they’re currently doing) is a no-brainer: a marquee WrestleMania match with his famous cousin, The Rock. There are rumors this may happen, but given that Rocky has basically retired from wrestling in order to focus on his much more lucrative career as a blockbuster movie star, it feels increasingly unlikely that this angle will come to fruition.

2 The Big Three-Way Shield Feud

Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns at Battleground 2016

As soon as Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and Dean Ambrose started getting popular as The Shield, fans were eagerly anticipating the inevitable breakup, which of course would lead to a high-stakes triple threat match on PPV. But when they did break up, Reigns went his own way while Rollins and Ambrose engaged in a bitter rivalry. The trio had a couple of three-way bouts -- including one in Florida Championship Wrestling in 2012 and one for the WWE Championship at Battleground 2016 -- but it was never the epic feud based on their past together that fans hoped for.

1 Kofi Kingston Winning The Royal Rumble

Kofi Kingston in the Royal Rumble

In 2019, Kofi Kingston defied expectations by defeating Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania, seemingly all thanks to the will of the fans. It was a huge moment for a likeable star seemingly stranded in the midcard and tag divisions, but there’s still one story to tell: Kofi Kingston striving to win the Royal Rumble. He’s almost always a moment-maker in these matches, doing something ridiculous to keep himself in the fray, but has never actually won the Rumble itself. It would be wonderful if WWE turned this into a full-on storyline, but it’s supremely unlikely.
