SummerSlam 2022 would mark the beginning of a new era in WWE. This would be the first-ever WWE PPV (or Premium Live Event) devoid of Vince McMahon. Fans were anticipating, or at least hoping, for some notable creative changes and new angles. The event delivered noteworthy returns and unforgettable moments. Some elements of the program felt like a new regime was at the helm, while others elements underscored the deep-rooted issues WWE has held for the last several years. Here are your winners and losers from WWE SummerSlam 2022.

Winner: Bianca Belair Defeats Becky Lynch To Retain Raw Women's Championship

Bianca Belair and Big Time Becks had a big-time feel. Two of the best wrestlers on the planet had a hard time finding their rhythm early in the match. Lynch targeted Belair's arm, priming her up for the Disarmher. Meanwhile, Becky took a Jaded and landed square on her shoulder, which seemed to affect the rest of the match.

The bout's final minutes were gripping. Belair hit a KOD on the outside, but Becky snuck back in at the count of 9. Lynch hit Belair with a Man Handle Slam and got a breathless near fall. When she attempted the same move from the top rope, Bianca countered it with a Spanish Fly, followed by another KOD. 1-2-3.

Bianca retained her Raw Women's Championship. After the match, Lynch extended her hand and hugged Bianca to a warm ovation.

Winners: Bayley Returns! Dakota Kai Is Back! Io Sharai Debuts!

It didn't take long for SummerSlam to deliver surprises. After Belair's win, Bayley made her way to the ring. Bayley was joined by the recently released Dakota Kai and NXT Star Io Sharai (now going by Io Skye). The three fresh faces appear to be forming a heel stable.

As they went toe-to-toe with the champ, Becky returned as Belair's backup. This was a very welcome shot of adrenaline to the WWE Women's division.

Loser: Theory's Geek Streak Continues

Theory is making a case for Worst Wrestler Of The Year. Since "winning" the Money In The Bank briefcase, the young WWE superstar is an atrocious 0-7. SummerSlam would not be the night he turned it around.

He challenged Bobby Lashley for the United States Championship and got manhandled, despite beating Lashley with his MITB briefcase before the bell. It took a few short minutes for Lashley to get Theory in the Hurt Lock, which resulted in a quick tap-out.

Later in the night - Theory would attempt to cash in his MITB Title Shot while Reigns and Lesnar were down and out. But before the referee could make it official, Brock gave Theory an F5. Geek!

Winner: Edge Returns To Screw Judgement Day

The Mysterios and Judgement Day match left the crowd pretty silent. The wrestlers inexplicably stood on the apron waiting for legal tags despite this being a no disqualification match. For the most part, it was a paint-by-numbers television match.

Then, a returning Edge emerged from a wall of fire. He delivered a spear to Damian Priest and Finn Balor, the stable that betrayed him a couple of months ago. This led to a double 619 by the Mysterios, which was enough for the victory.

Losers: Street Profits Fall To The Usos

The Street Profits would get one more shot at The Usos. This time, the match would feature special guest referee Jeff Jarrett (who was boringly good at his job).

The match was not the best for these two teams, but it was serviceable. It seemed like we were looking at new champions when Motez Ford hit a devastating Frog Splash. It was so devastating, however, that it hurt Ford himself. The momentary delay of the pinfall attempt was enough for time for Jimmy to kick out before three.

The Nashville crowd was stunned silent when the Usos hit their 1-D on Dawkins. The Usos continue their epic title run, and The Street Profits remain in limbo. Montez Ford's performance throughout the match teased a potential heel turn.

Loser: Ronda Rousey Screwed In SmackDown Championship Match

The SmackDown Women's Championship match was clearly cut for time. They exchanged impressive maneuvers early on, which led to an exchange of mat work.

Rousey was able to work Liv Morgan's arm early and often. Ronda continually got the champion in the arm bar, but Morgan kept getting to the ropes.

Just as the story was developing into something compelling, it ended. Rousey got Morgan in an armbar again, but Ronda's shoulders ended up on the mat during the hold. Liv Morgan tapped out as the referee counted to three, but the referee never saw it.

Rousey had Liv defeated before the three count but wasn't crowned the victor. An irate Rowdy Ronda attacked Liv and the referee after the match in what appears to be a complete heel turn.

Winner: Roman Reigns Outlasts Brock Lesnar

Many WWE fans were not excited about the SummerSlam main event, a match we had seen not once, not twice, not three times... you get it. However, the Last Man Standing Match between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar offered a lot of creative spots and drama that had been sorely missing from their previous encounters.

RELATED: Roman Reigns Wants Nothing To Do With Brock Lesnar After SummerSlamTable spots, suplexes, F5s, Spears, and Superman Punches filled the early minutes. After brutalizing Roman with his whole offensive arsenal, Brock Lesnar got frustrated. He went out to the massive tractor (it was a digger) and used it to lift the entire ring. Roman tumbled onto the floor as half of the wrestling ring was suspended in the air.

Outside, the match fell into chaos. The Usos got involved and got beat down by Lesnar. Paul Heyman was F5'd through the announce table. Reigns answered with a spear. From that point, Reigns hit Lesnar with everything he could muster, Spears, the MITB briefcase, and both Championship belts. Lesnar continued to get up at the count of 9. Each time Lesnar rose his feet, the crowd's elation increased.

Finally, the entire Bloodline threw every piece of furniture they could find on top of Lesnar. The referee counted to ten, and Roman Reigns marches to a 700-Day Championship title reign.
