Sunny. Sable. Terri. Chyna. During the mid-late 90s, these four ladies helped to keep the women’s division going, seldom wrestling a match during this time. But Chyna stood out from her contemporaries in a variety of ways. She wanted to be a wrestler and trained under the watchful eye of Walter “Killer” Kowalski, the same Walter Kowalski that taught a certain current EVP Of Global Talent Strategy Development, otherwise known as Triple H.

As the story goes. Shawn Michaels and Hunter Hearst Helmsley were trying to find something to get Triple H to the next level. Joanie Laurer was looking for her way into the business and from there began one of the most interesting and influential careers in WWE history was born. Her life unfortunately had a tragic ending but thankfully, her legacy in the ring has endured thanks to her fans.

The Strongest Woman Around

Chyna Chokes Out Marlena

Making her debut at In Your House: Final Four, Chyna appeared and immediately imposed her will on Marlena. The five-foot, eleven-inch 200 lb Amazon against the five foot-nothing Marlena was an absolutely terrifying sight.

When Triple H was done with Goldust, Chyna’s massive frame would constantly help HHH win matches with well-placed shots to the nether regions. While no man in WWE at this time would deck a woman, The Ninth Wonder Of The World had no problem making sure some of HHH’s opponents might sing an octave or two higher. Never before and perhaps never since as physically imposing as Chyna.

Chyna Was Funny Too

No, Chyna was never going to be a stand-up comedian, but there were several times in her career where just by playing the straight woman to a bunch of degenerate fools or sexual deviants, she made for some memorable moments.

She knew what she looked like and did not being the butt of a joke when HHH and HBK intimated that should be referred to as “Double-Degeneration X,” that also happened literally when after teasing a breakup, she led her squad in mooning the audience. Her date with Mark Henry and glowing smile as the Mamacita to Eddie Guerrero’s Latino Heat helped to show the many different facets of Chyna’s character outside of the ring.

Her Work In The Ring Was Lackluster

Once it was time for The Ninth Wonder Of The World to enter the ring as a competitor, some chinks in the Amazon’s armor began to shone through. During a time when most of the women’s matches involved ripping clothes off, Chyna had felt she was more suited to do combat with men. She even felt this way when more experienced grapplers like Jacqueline and Ivory were brought in to help show Lita and Trish the ropes.

She was granted her wish, becoming the first-ever woman to be part of the Royal Rumble (she even won the right to be number 30!). Later she famously won the Intercontinental Championship from Jeff Jarrett and co-held the gold with Chris Jericho. Despite being able to really set the Women’s Division on fire and possibly bringing forth a revolution years earlier, she continued to want to work more with the men. When she finally won the Women’s Title at WrestleMania X7, she trounced Ivory and completely disrespected her in the process. Several weeks later, she made short work of Lita instead of trying to have a match with her, and then the real-life drama and troubles started.

The End

Chyna was one of the most influential and memorable superstars of The Attitude Era. Unfortunately, real-life issues brought an end to her WWE career as her break-up with Triple H was devastating for her. Every fan knows the story - her boyfriend worked himself into a shoot with the Boss’ daughter and the rest is history for Mr. and Mrs. Hunter Hearst Helmsley.

But this pivotal seemingly shook the debutante degenerate to her core. She was expected to happily keep coming to work every day and be professional. In order to do that, she asked for an exorbitant amount of money, essentially pricing herself out of a job. In the ring, her career was over, save for a few appearances in TNA and New Japan.

Chyna's Life After WWE

Chyna Flexing

After the heights she achieved in WWE, it did seem way out of character for The Ninth Wonder Of The World, who once studied to become an FBI agent to start making adult films.

While there is nothing wrong with this, when you hear the people who knew her tell the story, not only was it completely out of left field, but it was the first misstep for a girl who was failing to pick up the pieces after an ugly end to her relationship. Drugs were added to the equation and sadly, the once-mighty Amazon fell into a dark place she was never able to find her way out of, she would die of an accidental drug overdose on April 17, 2016.

A Legacy Resurrected

Original DX

A little over a year prior to her death, Triple H had told Steve Austin on his WWE Network podcast that while Chyna deserved a spot in the Hall Of Fame, googling her name and seeing her adult videos could be problematic to the WWE Universe. Meanwhile, he mentioned this to a host who had been arrested for beating his ex-wife Debra and is still beloved by the Universe.

The answer seemed like a huge foot-in-mouth moment for The Cerebral Assassin. It was probably more that no one in WWE brass wanted to give Chyna a live mic for her acceptance speech. But she finally got the honor of being recognized for her achievements as part of Degeneration X when the group was inducted into the 2019 Hall Of Fame Class. Unfortunately, The Ninth Wonder Of The World finally got her just due and recognition posthumously, but nearly every member of the current female locker room owes a debt of gratitude to Chyna for all she was able to achieve and everything that fans were hopeful of that she would have achieved.
