WWE Superstar John Cena has opened up about WWE's overreliance on what he referred to as an "ageing prospect."

Cena was speaking to Brian Truitt of USA Today while promoting The Suicide Squad when he commented on his current role as a WWE part-timer and shared his thoughts on what the future holds for his relationship with the company.

“I wish there was some sort of fountain of youth where I could be a full-time contributor,” Cena said, before adding that it's in the interest of both parties if he leaves WWE behind for good at some point. “The longer they continue to bet on an aging prospect, that makes [WWE’s] future a little bit less stable," he said.

Cena also talked about the importance of stepping away and taking a break from certain projects.

“There's a lot of shame involved with openly saying, ‘I need time for me,’ ” the 16-time World Champion confessed. “People view that as selfish, but if you're running correctly, then you're just easier to deal with and everybody around you is going to feed off that energy," he added. “I just love what I do so much. I want to make the most of it.”

For now, Cena seems happy to ride the WWE wave all the way to Las Vegas, where he'll face Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship at SummerSlam 2021 in Las Vegas on August 24.

Cena returned to WWE following a lengthy hiatus at Money In The Bank last month. Cena had been absent from WWE while embarking on a carer in Hollywood, which is going pretty well. As well as big roles in movies like F9 (the most recent entry in the hugely successful Fast & Furious franchise) and the Transformer spinoff Bumblebee, Cena can currently be seen portraying the DC Comics character Peacemaker in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cena will team up with Gunn again for an action-adventure comedy series spinoff for HBO Max which explored the origins of the character.
