WWE's Money In The Bank pay-per-view encourages mass speculation from fans, wondering who's next in line to retrieve the briefcase. As a result, rumors spread like wildfire where there seems to be a near certainty that one or more wrestlers are a lock to become Mr. or Ms. Money In The Bank.

This past Sunday, there were plenty of entertaining segments, some keeping up with rumors and some going against what's expected from the masses or the dirt sheets. However, in the past, some MITB winners lined up exactly with the rumors circulating on the web.

10 Didn't Win MITB: John Cena (2021)

John Cena & Roman Reigns WWE MITB 2021

Back in early June, multiple websites fueled the rumor that John Cena's return match would see him winning the men's MITB ladder match. According to rumors, Cena was to return on SmackDown leading to the pay-per-view, announce himself in the MITB match, and go onto win the briefcase. If these rumors were true, it would have been Cena's first MITB ladder match victory since 2012.

The Money In The Bank briefcase would be Cena's key to a shot at Roman Reigns' Universal Championship. Considering that the heavy rumors of a Cena and Reigns match at SummerSlam, the 16-time world champion could have used his position as Mr. Money In The Bank to set a date with him and Roman for The Biggest Party of the Summer.

John Cena did end up returning following the conclusion of The Tribal Chief's Universal Title defense against Edge. Cena didn't make any announcements for SummerSlam, but he did gesture to Reigns that he can't see Cena. It doesn't take a pro wrestling genius to tell a match between the two is in the works.

9 Did Win MITB: Big E (2021)

Big E 2021 WWE MITB Winner

In the days leading up to Money In The Bank, Big E became the new favorite. Numerous publications picked up the story that Big E had the best chance of winning according to betting odds. When an outlet like Forbes talks about Big E being a favorite to win, it'd be sure to stir the proverbial rumor pot that this must reflect the plans of WWE management.

In the hours leading up to MITB, Big E was still the favorite to win. And on Sunday, the power of positivity prevailed when ya boy became Mr. Money In The Bank. Big E bested seven other Superstars to punch his ticket to a shot at the WWE Championship or Universal Title at any time for up to one year.

8 Didn't Win MITB: Drew McIntyre (2021)

Drew McIntyre MITB 2021

In the weeks leading up to the Money In The Bank pay-per-view, Drew McIntyre was the early favorite to win the ladder match. BetOnline favored The Scottish Warrior. Considering McIntyre was barred from challenging Bobby Lashley for the WWE Championship, the next logical option would be for McIntyre to win the MITB contract and cash in on "The Tribal Chief" Roman Reigns.

Back in June, TheSportsEntertainer released a YouTube video about rumors said to be leaked plans of McIntyre's winning the 2021 men's MITB ladder match. However, this rumored winner wouldn't become a reality because of Jinder Mahal and his henchmen. McIntyre was ambushed and taken to the back by Mahal and his men, being unable to finish the match. Big E would end up retrieving the briefcase.

7 Did Win MITB: Dean Ambrose (2016)

Dean Ambrose 2016 MITB Winner

"The Lunatic Fringe" Dean Ambrose was one of the rumored winners for the 2016 MITB ladder match, as reported by Huffpost. However, a WWE fan didn't have to dig through the internet to get the idea that Ambrose was going to become Mr. Money In The Bank.

The scheduled main event for the 2016 MITB PPV featured Ambrose's former Shield brethren, with Roman Reigns defending the WWE Championship against Seth Rollins. Out of the six men to compete in that year's Money In The Bank ladder match, Ambrose obviously had the most history with Reigns and Rollins. Dean winning MITB appeared as the most logical choice to set up a dream triple threat match between the former Hounds of Justice.

The rumors were confirmed when Ambrose won the 2016 MITB ladder match. Ambrose ended the pay-per-view as WWE Champion after he cashed in on Rollins who had just defeated Reigns for the title. On that night, all three former members of The Shield were WWE Champion at one point.

6 Didn't Win MITB: Kevin Owens (2016)

Next to Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens was the other top name rumored to win the 2016 MITB ladder match. Cagesideseats.com initially spread the rumor, which was picked up by multiple media outlets. Owens wouldn't end up winning Money In The Bank, but he did become the second-ever Universal Champion, winning the gold in a fatal four-way elimination match during the last Raw of August '16.

By the time Owens wrestled in the 2016 MITB ladder match, he was already a two-time Intercontinental Champion. However, this prizefighter didn't need to be Mr. Money In The Bank to make an impact in 2016. Sadly, Owens' time on top of Raw featured him as a cowardly heel rather than the destroyer he was on NXT.

5 Did Win MITB: Otis (2020)

WWE Otis

Otis may seem like the most unlikely MITB winner ever, but he did end up winning the men's match at the 2020 Money In The Bank pay-per-view. Blue Collar Solid shocked many in the WWE Universe when he won the briefcase, and though this was surprising and unpredictable to many, days before the event there were already rumors that Otis would win.

WrestlingNewsNow released a video, spreading rumors of a leaked report that Otis would do what seems to be unthinkable, become Mr. Money In The Bank. Rumors of Otis winning would match up with the results of the 2020 MITB event.

4 Didn't Win MITB: Mandy Rose (2020)

Mandy Rose WWE

The same outlet that spread rumors about Otis' win at MITB 2o2o also reported on rumors that Mandy Rose was to win the women's MITB ladder match. Rose was to replace Carmella and win the briefcase. The Money In The Bank PPV was suppose to be a couple's victory for Otis and his beautiful peach.

However, Rose didn't end up replacing Carmella. The Princess of Staten Island participated in the match while Mandy didn't wrestle that night. The women's MITB match concluded with Asuka retrieving the briefcase which was later revealed to contain the Raw Women's Championship.

3 Did Win MITB: Braun Strowman (2018)

Braun Strowman Money In The Bank

In May 2018, WrestlingNewsNow released a YouTube video revealing 10 leaked rumors regarding that year's Money In The Bank pay-per-view. The top-ranked rumor on their list was Braun Strowman winning the men's MITB ladder match.

Of course, Strowman would end up becoming the Monster In The Bank in 2018. However, he was unsuccessful in winning any gold with his briefcase. The Monster Among Men cashed in his contract against Roman Reigns at that year's Hell in a Cell pay-per-view. However, the outcome of that match was declared a no contest.

2 Didn't Win MITB: Ronda Rousey (2018)

Ronda Rousey vs Nia Jax, Money in the Bank 2018

Besides Braun Strowman, WrestlingNewsNow included in their video the rumor that Ronda Rousey would also win a MITB ladder match in 2018. Rousey was a top box office draw in UFC, so it would have made sense to make her Ms. Money In The Bank. However, Rousey ended up challenging for the Raw Women's Title at the pay-per-view rather than fight in a ladder match.

Alexa Bliss would end up winning the 2018 women's MITB match. That night, Bliss also interfered in Rousey's title match against Nia Jax, causing a disqualification. Little Miss Bliss would then capitalize on a fallen Jax and become the new champion. At SummerSlam, Rousey defeated Bliss for the title in just four minutes.

1 Did Win MITB: Alberto Del Rio (2011)

Back in 2011, months before the Summer of Punk took hold of WWE, the company reportedly had plans for Alberto Del Rio to feud with John Cena at SummerSlam. Rumors of Del Rio vs Cena were still lingering on the web when The Mexican Aristocrat entered Raw's Money In The Bank ladder match. Considering Cena was WWE Champion, a good way to set the wheels in motion for this feud would be to first have Del Rio become Mr. Money In The Bank. Of course, considering the rumors, Del Rio became the obvious choice to win the ladder match.

Del Rio had the most momentum out of all the other competitors. That year, Alberto won the first-ever 40-man Royal Rumble match. Although he was unsuccessful at capturing the World Title from Edge at WrestleMania 27 or Christian at Extreme Rules, Del Rio remained a strong heel. No other wrestler in any of the 2011 MITB ladder matches was rumored to face John Cena at The Biggest Party of the Summer.

Bleacher Report pointed out that the MITB gossip floating around the IWC was that "Alberto Del Rio is a clear-cut, I-don't-even-need-to-watch, dominant favorite to win the Raw Money in the Bank match." However, the publication argued against this predictable outcome occurring. But many in the WWE Universe knew better.
