Not only will WWE likely release a few more talents before all the cuts are said and done, WWE is shifting directions on their prospect hiring process and moving away from picking up wrestlers on the "indie scene".

Nick Khan's comments during his interview with Ariel Helwani alluded to it and now the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that multiple sources have suggested that WWE is no longer interested in indie wrestlers during their scouting sessions in an attempt to find the next big WWE star. The reports suggest that WWE is happy to let AEW hire from the indie scene and they'll prioritize fresh potential that has little experience but the right look.

So too, WWE plans to hold more tryouts like they did in Las Vegas during SummerSlam week. The company brought in 12 new prospects during those tryouts and the hope is that one or two of them can turn into something.

There was a time that Triple H had actively accented the NXT roster with indie stars. That led to the hiring of talents like Ricochet and others who had done well before joining WWE. Now, WWE officials are going to scout by looks and teach people with the right look how to be pro wrestlers. The idea must be that it's easier to teach people new WWE habits instead of trying to break old "bad ones".

This isn't to say that an indie talent won't ever be hired or that one might not try out at one of these WWE camps. It's only that WWE is no longer going to actively scout and pitch to independent wrestlers.

Is This The Right Move For WWE?

Some will argue that by doing this, WWE is passing up on an opportunity to find the next Daniel Bryan or CM Punk. Others will argue that the Bryan's and Punk's of the world are rare and that for every two guys that make it big in WWE from the independents, there are 50 who flop and can't adapt to the WWE way of doing things.

Time will tell if there's a diamond in the rough and if an athlete with little wrestling experience can pick up the aspects of the sports entertainment business better than an indie wrestler who has been toiling around the circuit for years.

Tony Khan of AEW has already commented on the rumors and cited a reference from a movie called Boiler Room to make his point. It's not clear if he was referencing the fact that in the movie the firm Ben Affleck works for turns out to be a front for a series of crimes and included brokers with a habit of being unethical. Either way, the meme is pretty funny.
