The Royal Rumble match has been a mixed bag of outstanding and excellent winners of the years with age proving to be just a number with youth and experience prevailing.

Since its inception in 1988, the Royal Rumble match has become one of the most hotly-anticipated matches on the WWE calendar. The winner of the Royal Rumble match has gone on to headline WrestleMania in World Championship matches with the tradition beginning in 1993. The WWE Championship has been on the line twice in Royal Rumble matches in 1992 and 2016. The Royal Rumble match has evolved with fans being treated to two Royal Rumble matches, with the women's Royal Rumble match introduced in 2018.

Winning the Royal Rumble match hasn't guaranteed success for every wrestler, but it has catapulted many wrestlers to becoming World Champions at WrestleMania. A lot of young wrestlers have benefitted from winning the Rumble, but there have been a plethora of the old-guard winning Royal Rumble matches at the later stages of their wrestling careers.

10 Youngest: Shawn Michaels - 29 Years And 6 Months (1995)

Shawn Michaels entered the 1995 Royal Rumble match from the unenviable number one position. The Heartbreak Kid and The British Bulldog were the first two participants, and they went the distance towards the bitter end.

Michaels was still 29 years of age, and he was on the cusp of becoming a main eventer. HBK had a fantastic performance as he eliminated eight competitors. Bulldog celebrated thinking he had won the Rumble, but it wasn't meant to be with Michaels getting back into the ring, and he pushed Bulldog off the top rope to win the Rumble for the first time.

9 Oldest: Brock Lesnar - 44 Years And 6 Months (2022)

Brock Lesnar lost the WWE Championship to Bobby Lashley at the 2022 Royal Rumble, but that didn't stop Lesnar from entering the men's Royal Rumble match as the 30th entrant. It became obvious that the Beast Incarnate was going to win the Rumble once he got involved.

Lesnar wreaked havoc as he registered five eliminations in succession to win his second Royal Rumble match. The Beast Incarnate eliminated Randy Orton, Bad Bunny, Riddle, Shane McMahon, and Drew McIntyre in a two-minute-and-a-half cameo, booking his spot in the main event of WrestleMania 38.

8 Youngest: Randy Orton - 28 Years And 9 Months (2009)

Randy Orton has a few records, as he is the youngest World Champion in WWE history at the age of 24, and he was seeking his first Royal Rumble match victory in 2009. The Viper had his Legacy stablemates Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase by his side.

Orton had a remarkable outing as he survived 48 minutes en route to winning his first Royal Rumble match. The Apex Predator eliminated his former Evolution mentor Triple H to win the Rumble, and he headed towards the main event of WrestleMania 25.

7 Oldest: Batista - 45 Years And 8 Days (2014)

Fans salivated at Batista winning the 2005 Royal Rumble match, but nine years later, fans weren't welcoming of Batista's participation in the 2014 Royal Rumble match. The Animal was hoping that lightning would strike twice as the 28th entrant in 2014, just like he was in 2005.

The Animal had a good outing as he eliminated Erick Rowan, Ryback, and Alberto Del Rio. It was whittled down between Batista and Roman Reigns, and fans wanted the Big Dog to triumph. Reigns was close to prevailing, but Batista received a resounding chorus of boos when he eliminated Reigns to win the Rumble for the second time.

6 Youngest: The Rock - 27 Years And 8 Months (2000)

Unquestionably, The Rock was the overwhelming favorite to win the 2000 Royal Rumble match. There wasn't much firepower in this Rumble with the likes of Big Show and Kane posing a legitimate threat to stop Rock from winning the Rumble.

The Great One was the 24th entrant, and he wasted no time in this Rumble as he removed Big Boss Man, Crash Holly, and Al Snow from the equation. However, Show should have won the Rumble as both of Rock's feet touched the floor, which the referees failed to spot. They used it in a storyline later with Rock overcoming Show to win the Royal Rumble match just four months shy of his 28th birthday.

5 Oldest: Triple H - 46 Years And 6 Months (2016)

Triple H marked his return to WWE as the 30th entrant in the 2016 Royal Rumble match with Roman Reigns' WWE Championship at stake. The Cerebral Assassin eliminated Dolph Ziggler and Bray Wyatt from the Rumble.

The Game brought the curtain down on Roman Reigns' WWE Championship reign, as he eliminated him with fans pleased at his removal from the bout. It was whittled down between Triple H and Dean Ambrose, and the Game eliminated Ambrose to become a 14-time WWE World Champion and a two-time Royal Rumble winner.

4 Youngest: Yokozuna - 26 Years And 3 Months (1993)

The 1993 Royal Rumble match was a historical one as the winner of that Rumble would go on to challenge for the WWE Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 9. Yokozuna entered the Rumble as the 27th entrant, and he received a push just months into his WWE career.

Yokozuna was on a roll, and he eliminated Tatanka, Carlos Colon, Earthquake, Tito Santana, Owen Hart, and Bob Backlund from the Rumble. He capped it off by hoisting Randy Savage over the top rope to win the Royal Rumble match. Yokozuna confronted Bret Hart backstage, whom he would beat for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 9.

3 Oldest: Edge - 47 Years And 3 Months (2021)

Edge marked his return to WWE in the 2020 men's Royal Rumble match, but a year later he was all business as he was looking to win the Royal Rumble match for the second time in his career. The WWE Hall of Famer was the number one entrant, and his rival and former tag team partner Randy Orton was the second entrant.

This was a vintage performance from Edge, and his best friend Christian returned as a surprise entrant. Furthermore, the Rated-R Superstar won the Royal Rumble match for the second time in his career, and he won it 11 years to the day after his maiden triumph in 2010.

2 Youngest: Brock Lesnar - 25 Years And 6 Months (2003)

Brock Lesnar became the youngest WWE Champion at SummerSlam 2002, and he was looking to win the 2003 Royal Rumble match in a bid to headline WrestleMania 19 for a World Championship match. Lesnar pulled double duty as he beat Big Show in the curtain-raiser to earn his spot in the Royal Rumble match.

Lesnar saw off Shelton Benjamin, Charlie Haas, Matt Hardy, and The Undertaker to become a Royal Rumble match winner for the first time. Lesnar isn't just the youngest Royal Rumble match winner in WWE history, he won it on the first attempt which is a superb achievement.

1 Oldest: Mr. McMahon - 53 Years And 5 Months (1999)

The main focus of the 1999 Royal Rumble match was firmly on Mr. McMahon and Steve Austin. The Texas Rattlesnake was bidding for his third consecutive Royal Rumble match victory, but the Chairman of the Board as the second entrant had other ideas.

McMahon spent a large portion of the Rumble out of the match, and he undertook commentary duties throughout. The Corporation assaulted Austin backstage, but he managed to return to the Rumble match later on. Ultimately, with a helping hand from the new WWE Champion The Rock, Mr. McMahon eliminated Austin to become the oldest and unlikeliest Royal Rumble match winner, at the age of 53.
